Carving out lifelong friendships

They’re always learning something. Both the seniors, and their senior buddies.
The Underwood seniors gathered their little buddies together Tuesday morning for the 14th annual carving of the pumpkins in the lunch room.
Even the senior adviser, Toni Cottingham, has learned something while doing the annual event.
"Gutting the pumpkins ahead of time," she said. "We bring them gutted."
That was something she learned through experience.
Although the idea of letting the first-graders dig their hands in to scoop out the pumpkin guts sounds like a lot of fun for them, it is also a huge mess and takes too long – they would never get their pumpkin carved in their not-quite-an-hour time frame.
