Coaching a dance team isn’t just about making sure the team members know the choreography and are ready to perform with a smile when they hit the floor. First-year head coach of the Underwood Comettes varsity dance team Courtney Blotske can attest to that. She learned a lot about that in a hurry as she accepted the coaching position shortly before the season started this fall, taking over for Anna Liu, who opted to not return as varsity coach this year.
“I didn’t expect there to be so much organization for the competitions and different deadlines, and just small things that you never think about that go into it,” said Blotske. “But, it’s fun. I absolutely love it.
“I was 100 percent terrified that I was going to not only disappoint myself, but disappoint this group of girls and be a horrible coach, but they’re making me feel like I’m doing a great job,” she added.
The Comettes have 12 dancers on the team this year, the majority of whom are junior high dancers.
“It’s challenging for me to try teach them technique, but luckily I do have a couple older girls that are good at technique, so I really rely on them,” said Blotske. “And they’re so willing to work with the younger girls.”
