A rifle blast from the past

It takes special talent to shoot a rifle, especially if the intended target is a few hundred yards away. Underwood is home to some shooting talent, including Collin Weisz, who has been hitting the mark all over the state. This summer, Weisz placed first out of 16 shooters in a buffalo gong shoot in Minot. During the tournament, contestants shot at metal targets that resembled various animals such as buffalo, deer, turkeys and foxes. The targets for a buffalo gong shoot are usually between 200 and 1,000 yards away, Weisz said. "If you hit them, they ring like a bell and you get credit for a hit," Weisz said.
