A new spin on ‘greenhouse effect’

While outside the fields may have been looking a little parched, inside the newly renovated greenhouse at the Turtle Lake-Mercer School, the new seedlings were basking in the humidity of their climate-controlled haven. Mature tomato plants were even providing a few cherry tomatoes fresh for the picking.
The new greenhouse, which replaces one that was about 20 years old, was started last spring during quarantine, noted Turtle Lake-Mercer FFA teacher Paul Buchholz, who did most of the greenhouse construction.
“Everything was done by the end of July. The kids built the benches in here, and the kids did 95 percent of the wiring,” said Buchholz.
